GOALS

In the municipality of Puerto Gaitán, located in the department of Meta, Colombia, lies the Rubiales oil field, owned by Ecopetrol. In this field, the need arose to establish foundations for a series of metal structures, such as road crossings, supports, and shelters.

Initially, shallow foundations such as concrete blocks, slabs, and footings were considered,
in addition to the possibility of using piles for some structures. However, given the project’s technical requirements and geographic location, a thorough review of the state of the art in foundations was conducted. As a result, helical piles were chosen due to their technical and economic advantages for constructing the project’s foundations.

CONVENTIONAL SOLUTION
The load conditions, soil geotechnical properties, and foundation system geometry required large volumes of excavation. However, construction deadlines, restricted site access, and other factors made foundation construction unfeasible.

HELICAL PILE SOLUTION
Helical piles emerged as an excellent alternative. However, only through meticulous engineering work was it possible to configure them optimally to withstand the loads associated with structures. Integrating the outstanding properties and characteristics of helical piles into a suitable foundation model made it possible to meet the varied load demands in a complex geotechnical environment.

INSTALLATION
It was determined that the loads could be supported by one pile per support of the structure, with a metal pile cap attached. The geometric characteristics of the piles varied according to the loads associated with each support, with diameters of 2.7/8 and 3.5 inches selected, and thicknesses of 0.217 or 2.50 inches, respectively.

The foundation construction was completed in 23 working days, achieving a performance of 32 meters of pile per day, for a total of 724 meters installed with their respective metal head properly installed and leveled.

Helical piles are the right solution for substation structures.
